Hokusai great wave 2017 | 1oz silver | Fiji
Hokusai great wave 2017, Fiji 1oz silver coin
This remarkable 2017 Silver 1 oz Fiji Great Wave silver bullion coin is produced by the U.S. based Scottsdale Mint, in cooperation with the government of Fiji. Its featured obverse image is drawn directly from the 1830 woodblock print by Japanese artist, Hokusai, born ca. 1760. The print, originally known as, "Under the Wave off Kanagawa," is actually part of a 36-print collection, generally known as, "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji." The Great Wave print is certainly the most widely known of the larger collection.
The magnificent energy displayed in these massive waves, is masterfully captured in the coin's design. You can clearly see its trueness to the detail of the original woodblock print. Yet, it has been transformed to be showcased in the new medium of the proof-like finish of this Silver Bullion Coin. Inscriptions included on the reverse give honor to the original artist and his timeless print, "Hokusai The Great Wave." Also included is the metal's troy weight and fineness.
The obverse displays a large Fuji Coat of Arms, centered in the field, with the background finish lightly-brushed. Encircling the rim is a nicely ornate border design, with "FIJI - 2017," inscribe at the top, and the face value at the bottom.
Though the beauty of the Wave print magnificently stands on its own fineness, viewed in context within the collection provides an even deeper appreciation. Follow this link and take a moment to review Hokusai's entire 36-print collection.
